Further steps are being taken to limit any spread of COVID-19.
Playground equipment will be barred from public use.
The municipalities have already posted signage on equipment after a warning that playgrounds are not sanitized or cleaned and therefore pose a risk.
Playground equipment has been taped off and signs have been updated to note the closure. Temporary fencing will be installed at St.Catharines locations.
St.Catharines Mayor, Walter Sendzik says the decision to close off is in pursuit of protecting the health of residents.
“We understand this is a difficult time for everyone and that parks and playgrounds provide an outlet for children, but right now we have to put their health, and that of the greater community first. No one is invincible, and we all have a role to play to limit exposure to the virus. It is important that residents stay home as much as possible, including children.”
While playground equipment is off-limits, the green-space at parks is still open to the public for passive use such as walking or jogging.
However, it is always important to practice social distancing in public spaces, as well as practice regular hand washing and hygiene to prevent COVID-19 transmission.
