St. Catharines Accepting Applications for Community Outdoor Ice Rink Program

Program moves from pilot stage to full-fledged program.

The City of St. Catharines has opened up applications for the Community Outdoor Ice Rink Program.

The program, which operated as a pilot project the past two winters, is accepting submission from volunteer groups wishing to build, operate and maintain outdoor skating rinks at City-owned parks.

Groups can apply for any park of their choice, but it must have sufficient lighting, a reasonably flat surface, access for emergency vehicles, and adequate parking.

Last year, three volunteer organizations operated rinks at Partridge Park, St. Patrick's Park and the Port Dalhousie tennis court.

Applicants don't need to be registered charities or non-profits, but do need to allow equal and free access to all community members.

The City is offering grants of up to $1,000 per rink to help cover expenses, and up to six rink locations will receive support.

Applications will be accepted until October 4th, and winning submissions will be notified by October 15th.

The community outdoor ice rink season will run from December 1st to March 28th.
