Speed Limit to Drop in St. Catharines

City responds to complaints from area residents

The speed limit on city streets in St. Catharines is about to drop.

The St. Catharines Standard is reporting it'll go from 50kms to 40kms an hour, after every member on city council voted in favour of the move at a recent meeting.

The issue was brought to council after complaints from residents about speeding and safety.

City staff say you will see the signs put up over a one year period, costing the city over $260,000.

The City of St. Catharines tried to get the province to pick up the tab, by changing the Highway Traffic Act in reducing speed limits on local roads, but failed to convince the Ontario government to do so.
