Should Ottawa Tighten Border Restrictions Because of Threat From Omicron Variant?

Some experts question wisdom of lifting PCR testing requirement for day trippers

Although it's easier to cross the border for short trips now that Ottawa has waived the PCR test requirement for fully vaccinated Canadian travellers gone 72 hours or less,  health experts are advising us to take care as cases of COVID skyrocket in New York state.

WGRZ in Buffalo reporting new data from Erie County shows local hospitals have reached or are nearly at their capacity for inpatients.

Just over 89 percent of all staffed beds in Erie County hospitals are full and close to 87 percent of ICU beds are occupied.

Yesterday New York Governor Kathy Hochul warned a winter spike in new cases is underway especially in parts of upstate New York including Western New York.

Hochul is also anticipating a post Thanksgiving holiday spike in cases.

Yesterday, Ontario's top doctor Kieran Moore told reporters the province would consider reviewing border protocols with the federal government if the threat from the Omicron variant continues to grow.
