Over 3.6 million provided to support the creation of 24 affordable homes in Niagara Falls.

A local housing project has received some funds from the provincial and federal governments.

Over $3 million has been invested through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative to support the creation of 24 affordable homes at 6388 Hawkins Street in Niagara Falls.

The homes will support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The low-rise apartment complex, which is owned and operated by Niagara Regional Housing, offers units with one to three bedrooms and a 'Housing First' unit, to help people move into permanent housing.

A grand opening for the complex was held today, with attendees including Chris Bittle, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, on behalf of the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing, Diversity and Inclusion.

"Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home," Bittle noted. "Our government continues to work with our provincial partners, including the Government of Ontario to find ways to create more affordable homes that meet the needs of Canadians, including right here in Niagara Falls. This is one of the ways our National Housing Strategy continues to ensure no one is left behind."
