Province Urging School Boards to Keep Classrooms Open

Ministry of Education issues memo to school boards, asking them to make "every effort is made to keep schools open for as many children as possible."

The province is asking school boards to put backup plans in place, as the possibility of a prolonged strike by unionized education workers looms.

The Ministry of Education has issued a memo to school boards, asking them to implement plans to ensure "every effort is made to keep schools open for as many children as possible."

The memo says it's vital for children to "continue their learning uninterrupted for the entirety of the school year."

Boards that are planning to shut down schools in the event of a strike are advising to make "a speedy transition to remote learning."

Many school boards, including the DSBN and Niagara Catholic, have announced plans to shut down schools on Friday, when CUPE workers are expected to hit picket lines.

Both the DSBN and Niagara Catholic say the decision to shut schools down was made for the safety of the students.

While the province is in the process of passing legislation to ban the proposed strike and impose a contract on workers, the union has said it will walk off the job tomorrow until further notice.

The bill is expected to pass today.
