Province Upping Pressure on Feds to Tighten Border Restrictions

The province is once again urging the federal government to tighten restrictions at the U.S. - Canada border.

Deputy Premier Christine Elliott and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones have written a letter to Public Safety Minister Bill Blair and Minister of Health Patty Hajdu, pushing for a national strategy to secure Canadian borders.

A report released last week by the federal COVID-19 Testing and Screening Expert Advisory Panel indicates the current border measures haven't kept concerning variants out of Canada.

The panel also noted that about a third of air travelers aren't getting the required second COVID-19 test during quarantine.

Elliott and Jones say this proves the government isn't doing enough at the border to protect Canadians from COVID-19.

"One case of community transmission of a variant is proof that border measures have failed in containing these threats. In this third wave, over 70 per cent of daily cases in Ontario are the result of these imported variants, which have had devastating health impacts on Ontarians and caused unprecedented economic damage to our communities."

Jones and Elliott are encouraging the federal government to implement and enforce an effective quarantine approach for non-vaccinated travelers while ensuring safe arrivals for international travelers who are fully vaccinated.

They're also pushing for fully vaccinated international travelers to show proof of a vaccination that is recognized by Health Canada and international allies, as well as a mandatory COVID-19 test upon arrival to identify possible new variants.
