Province Updates Science Curriculum

Ontario government says it's "de-streaming" the Grade 9 science course for the upcoming school year, and revising the elementary science curriculum.

The provincial government is making changes to students' science curriculum.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement today, noting the new program will take effect in September

The curriculum focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning, with mandatory learning on subjects such as coding as young as grade one, continuing through grade 9.

“Ontario has transformed the curriculum to now emphasize STEM education across all grades, embedding life and job skills that will support the next generation of scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs,” said  Lecce. “From finding new cures for cancer, to space robotics that reach new planets, and the development of artificial intelligence and technologies that are changing the economy, Ontario's new science and technology curriculum is focused on giving young people the skills to think critically, dream boldly and chart new pathways forward for our economy.”

According to the province, the new program will reflect real-life experiences, providing students with "critical life and job skills.

Students will also learn about advancements in science and technologies such as artificial intelligence, as well as environmental protection, life systems, matter and energy and earth and space systems.

Officials note the Grade 9 science curriculum has been de-streamed, meaning all ninth grade students will take the same class.

Ontario's elementary science and technology curriculum was last updated in 2007, and the Grade 9 course was last altered the following year.
