Province Releases Tourism Economic Recovery Report

The Ontario government has released details about a report making recommendations on how to help the province's tourism industry during the pandemic.

Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries spoke about the report today at the Shaw Festival Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

She was joined by Tim Hudak, Chair of the Tourism Economic Recovery Ministerial Task Force.

The report includes 10 suggestions to support tourism in Ontario, including less red tape for tourism businesses and increased collaboration between the industry and public health officials.

It also recommends offering itineraries, packages and trails to help visitors find Ontario products and experiences.

Tim Jennings, Executive Director of the Shaw Festival, says he's happy the government has commissioned the report.

"Arts and culture tourism is an essential part of the overall tourism economy and one that punches well above its weight in terms of economic amplification. Arts tourists stay for long periods and invest in other activities; eating at local restaurants, staying at hotels, visiting wineries, markets and local shops and enjoying many other tourism destinations."

The input from the report will help the ministry with the development of its five year plan.
