Province Proposes Bill Requiring Businesses to Allow Washroom Access to Delivery Workers

Labour Minister Monte McNaughton says delivery staff often denied washroom access at businesses served.

The Ontario government plans to introduce legislation requiring companies to allow bathroom access to delivery workers dropping off or picking up items.

According to the Ontario Workforce Recovery Advisory Committee, couriers, truck drivers, and food delivery personnel are often denied use of the facilities at businesses where they provide service.

Labour Minister Monte McNaughton made the announcement today, noting that it's part of the government's effort to protect and support workers who are vulnerable.

"This is something most people in Ontario take for granted but access to washrooms is a matter of common decency currently being denied to hundreds of thousands of workers in this province," said Minister McNaughton. "Workers who deliver and pick up goods have been on the frontlines of the pandemic, ensuring that essential supplies continue to reach the people of Ontario. Providing these hardworking men and women with access to washrooms is a small change that will make a big difference, so they can do their jobs with the dignity and respect they deserve."

McNaughton says the if the bill is passed, it would only apply to commercial businesses, not to private residences where items are dropped off.
