Province May Re-open Schools On Regional Basis

Health Minister Christine Elliott says the province may choose a regional approach for re-opening schools.

In an interview with CP24 this morning, Elliott noted while Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams is anxious for a return to in-person learning, case counts need to be low enough for schools to re-open safely.

"I do know that Education Minister Stephen Lecce is working with our Chief Medical Officer of Health, who is anxious to return students to school as well, but we need to make sure the community transmission is low enough for that to be safe, because what happens in schools reflects what's happening in the community."

She says it's possible in-person lessons can return to some regions in June, but Williams will have the final say on the matter.

Her comments come after a group of doctors wrote to Premier Doug Ford, warning that prolonged closures has a significant impact on the mental well-being of kids.

Meanwhile, Williams has said parents can expect to hear a decision soon about the re-opening of schools.
