Funding will help expand Hamilton General Hospital's emergency department to improve services for region around Hamilton, West Niagara and south-central Ontario.

Hamilton Health Sciences is getting $20 million from the province.

The announcement was made by Health Minister Christine Elliott and Rob MacIsaac, President and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences.

In addition to the $3 million previously invested, the organization will receive $5 million to help plan the redevelopment of the Juravinski Hospital.

The redevelopment will include a new patient care tower and over 100 new inpatient beds to the site.

It will also help fund renovations to the existing structure and increase capacity for ambulatory care and support programs.

"This is an exciting moment for health care in our region," said MacIsaac. "Redeveloping Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre will further expand the reach of our leading regional programs, add vital inpatient beds to the system, and modernize patient areas for our teams to provide exceptional care."

As well, an investment of over $15 million is being pledged to support a new project to expand the emergency department at Hamilton General Hospital.

The project will help relieve space and volume pressures, improve wait times for patients and provide additional space for ambulance off-loading.

The province is also working with Hamilton Health Sciences to continue planning for the projects, which include identifying programming, operational and space requirements and assessing the health care needs of patients in the surrounding area.
