Province Introduces Paid Sick Leave Plan

The province has announced its own paid sick leave program.

If passed, the Ontario COVID-19 Worker Income Protection Benefit will require employers to pay up to $200 a day for three days if workers are sick, showing symptoms, getting vaccinated or have a mental health issue.

The announcement was made today by Labour Minister Monte McNaughton and Minister of Finance Peter Bethlenfalvy.

The program is retroactive from April 19th, and will continue until September 25th.

Workers will not be required to provide a note from their doctor or fill out any forms or applications for the benefit.

The province has faced intense pressure from health experts and opposition parties for not enacting a paid sick leave policy.

Yesterday, the federal government turned down a request from the province to double Canada Sickness Recovery Benefits, though the province offered to cover the cost.
