Province Expands Blue Box Recycling Program

The province is adding more items to the list of materials that can be recycled.

Environment Minister Jeff Yurek provided an update today, announcing that single-use items such as stir sticks, disposable plates, plastic cutlery and straws will now be accepted in blue bins.

Other items now being accepted include paper and plastic cups, trays, foils and bags and boxes sold for home use.

The province is also expanding blue bin collection to all communities outside the far north by 2026, as well as more places like apartment buildings, parks, schools and retirement homes.

Municipalities are expected to save $156 million under the new plan, as the changes will transition the costs from taxpayers to the producers of products and packaging responsible for managing the life cycle of their products.

The transition to the new program will be staggered between 2023 to 2025 to allow for municipalities to smoothly transition.
