Proposals are now being accepted for the building of the new South Niagara Hospital.

Infrastructure Ontario and Niagara Health have put out a call to teams to respond to a request for proposals for designing, building, financing and maintaining the facility.

Premier Doug Ford says the hospital will provide a great service to local residents.

"It is this government’s mission to fortify hospital capacity and ensure that Ontarians can receive world class health care, wherever they live in the Province," Ford noted. "This new hospital gets us closer to providing the people of the Niagara region with direct access to the quality of health care they deserve and a hospital that will fit the needs of its growing population."

Once complete, the hospital will have 469 beds, which is 156 more beds than the combined total at Niagara Health's locations in Port Colborne, Niagara Falls and Fort Erie.

Since 2018, the province has invested over $19.5 million towards the planning of the new facility, which will feature centres specializing in stroke, complex care, geriatic psychiatry and wellness in aging.

As well, Niagara Health will receive over $8.4 million in additional operating funding from the province starting this year, and the new hospital will also get over $1.4 million through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund.

Currently, Niagara Health is the fourth busiest Emergency Department in Ontario, with about 200,000 unscheduled visits every year.
