Prepare for a Windy Day in Niagara

Following the first snowfall on the weekend, the wind will blow considerably

Mother Nature made sure we knew winter is here over the weekend, but she's not done yet.

While most of the region was targeted with the first snowfall of the year, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement.

It says wind will pick up to 80kms an hour today for most of the Niagara region.

That should end as the evening progresses.

As for the snow, Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Owsiak tells us the snow made sure it didn't just land in one particular spot.

He admits it was forecast to reach southern Niagara, but up to 31cms blanketed most of the region, with smaller amounts toward Hamilton.

He adds most of the snowfall was done by early Saturday night.

Still, other areas of Ontario got hammered.

Environment Canada tells us Sunday conditions were especially intense in Wiarton and east towards Owen Sound.

Wiarton had 105 centimetres by mid-afternoon yesterday.

Provincial police had reported multiple calls for collisions and vehicles in ditches due to the storms, as well as through the Niagara region, prompting police to remind drivers to stay off the roads if possible.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the border in Buffalo, many people will be digging out for quite some time, after up to 6 feet of snow landed in many areas.  Pictures of the Bills' Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park revealed a snowed in winter wonderland.
