Premier Doug Ford Plans to Expand "Strong Mayor" Powers to Other Municipalities

Premier says "strong mayor" powers will extend beyond Ottawa and Toronto.

Premier Doug Ford says he plans to expand his government's "strong mayor" system to other communities.

Ford made the comment this morning at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference.

The "strong mayor" legislation was introduced last week to give the mayors of Ottawa and Toronto more powers when it comes to housing development.

Ford has pledged to build 1.5 million new homes over the next decade, and says the new powers are meant to help achieve that goal.

If passes, mayors would be able to draft a budget themselves or veto council approvals on matters of "provincial priority", though councilors can override a mayoral veto with a two-thirds vote.

Ford says details regarding additional powers for more mayors will be released in the coming months.
