Post Secondary Schools Told to Update Sexual Harassment and Violence Policies

This comes as Western University students plan one day walkout to protest handling of sexual violence allegations

The Ontario government is making it mandatory for colleges and universities to update their sexual violence and harassment policies.

The province says the update will help support students who have already gone through a difficult experience and may be feeling scared and vulnerable.

The changes will ensure that during a school's investigative process into a student complaint, the student will not be asked any irrelevant questions from staff or investigators relating to past sexual history or sexual expression.

Officials say as well "a complainant acting in good faith, who discloses or reports sexual violence, will not be subject to actions for violations of the institution’s policies related to drug and alcohol use at the time the sexual violence took place."

Post secondary schools will have until March 31st, 2022 to review and amend their sexual violence policies.
