Port Colborne Residents Reminded to Avoid Thin Ice

Phot supplied by City of Port Colborne.

Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services is reminding you to avoid thin ice that forms over open bodies of water.

Due to an abnormally warm winter so far, residents are being asked to exercise caution on both Lake Erie and the Welland Canal.

Fire Chief Tom Cartwright says that ice that forms over water is never 100 percent safe.

"There is always some risk involved. I would ask residents to please avoid both Lake Erie and the Welland Canal even if the ice looks safe."

If you do choose to enjoy winter activities on ice that forms over open bodies of water, some tips include verifying the ice conditions and ensuring its thickness.

You're also asked to ensure that the ice in the entire area has the same thickness and avoid areas that have currents or tides.

Clear, blue ice is considered the safest, and grey ice is a sign of the presence of water.
