Port Colborne Residents Advised to Avoid Frozen Pipes

The City of Port Colborne has some tips for residents on how to avoid frozen pipes this winter.

The reminder comes after the City received numerous phone calls from citizens experiencing frozen plumbing.

Some tips on how to avoid frozen water pipes in your home include disconnecting, draining and shutting off outdoor hoses and faucets, as well as keeping garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

You can also allow warm air to circulate around plumbing by opening kitchen, bathroom and laundry cabinet doors.

If your pipes are prone to freezing, you can get in touch with a plumber on the best way to protect your home.

If your pipes are already frozen, you can turn on a tap in the lowest point of the house, or warm the suspected frozen pipe with a blow dryer for one to two hours (you'll want to check on it to ensure it doesn't overheat).

You can also place a warm towel or rag around the suspected frozen pipe.
