UPDATE: Motorcyclist Dies After St. Catharines Crash

The province's Special Investigations Unit is investigating a St. Catharines collision that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.

Just after 10:00 a.m. this morning, a Niagara Regional Police officer traveling westbound on Welland Street noticed a man traveling eastbound on a mini motorcycle without a helmet. 

The officer made a U-turn to follow the motorcycle, which turned north onto York Street. 

A short time later, the mini motorcycle struck a pole after turning left onto Taylor Street. 

An autopsy is scheduled to occur in Toronto tomorrow.

A motorcycle driver has died after a collision in St. Catharines this morning. 

The collision occurred around 10:10 this morning near the intersection of York Street and Taylor Street. 

The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition, where they were pronounced dead. 

Officers anticipate York Street between Lowell Avenue to Sherwood Avenue to be closed until this evening. 

The NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit and Forensic Services Unit are continue their investigation into the cause of the crash. 

Officials tell us the Ontario Special Investigations unit has invoked their mandate, and are also investigating an interaction between an NRPS officer and the driver prior to the collision. 

No further details are currently available.
