They say a number of suspects usually target senior women at large stores
A warning from Niagara regional police to wary of what they're calling distraction thefts.
They say multiple suspects, usually 2 to 4, go into a large store and find a lone potential victim, usually older woman with a purse.
They follow the victim, and position themselves to be able to see the pin number when a transaction is made.
Police say the suspects follow the victim to their car, and one of them approaches the victim. The suspects say there are appears to be a "problem", such as a low tire, as the suspect appears to be helpful in trying to assist. While the "low tire" is inspected, another suspect then steals the credit card from within the car while the victim is distracted.
The thieves then run off and try to access and take as much money as possible from the debit or credit card.
Police say if someone approaches you while in your car, keep the window almost completely closed as you talk to them, and if you suspect anything, leave immediately.
