Pilot Project Launched to Provide Niagara Residents With Information on Road Closures and Construction Activities

Niagara Region pairing up with Municipal 511, a traveler information service currently used by over half of Ontario's municipalities.

The Niagara Region is looking to help drivers get information on local road closures and construction activities before heading out.

Together with Municipal 511, Niagara has joined a two-year pilot project that communicates planned road closures and emergency information as known.

The project has been going for several months, and staff have provided an information report to Regional Council and the Public Works committee.

Officials say closures and construction mapped out by the Region and municipal staff will show up on navigational systems to alert drivers.

Staff will report back to Niagara Region's Public Works Committee on the outcome of the pilot project and possible options in the fourth quarter of this year.

If the program is successful, staff will consider splitting the annual subscription cost between the Niagara Region Transportation Services Operating Budget and participating local municipalities.

Information on local road closures, floods, traffic and other road details can be found here
