If council passes budget tonight, it'll add 2.94% to the tax levy
If you live in Port Colborne, you might be facing a property tax increase of $114 a year, if council passes its' budget tonight.
At the start of a recent council meeting, City Treasurer Bryan Boles pointed out that's a tax levy increase of 2.94%, on an average home valued at $212,000 from 2016 assessment.
"Staff wants to point out 51% of that increase relates to the capital budget, and we'll talk about the infrastructure gap we're trying to close at this period of time, and that is what this budget is doing," he says.
He adds if there's a house assessment increase of point five, then the $114 would go down.
They also discussed during the meeting there'll be a $46 increase in the water bill, pending the budget passes.
The City Treasurer pointed out this is due to a number of big projects, including $500,000 to line wastewater pipes. "Storm water, we're looking at backflow control... this is going to be along the Canal and other areas such as that. About $300,000, this will prevent water from moving back up when the lake rises, back up into the city."
The city also has a number of watermain, road and sidewalk projects to get to.
