Caucus votes to remove Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole by a vote of 73-45.

Erin O'Toole is out as leader of the federal Conservatives.

Seventy-three out of the 118 MPs who voted opted to remove O'Toole, paving the way for another leadership race a year and a half after the last one.

Earlier this week, one-third of the party's caucus signed a letter to force a review of his leadership.

The party will now need to pick an interim leader, before a new party leader is picked.

We have reached out to Niagara West MP Dean Allison for his thoughts on the leadership review, but he hasn't responded as of the time of this writing.

Niagara Falls MP Tony Baldinelli has issued the following statement.

“Being the leader of any political party is an extremely challenging job, which takes full attention and tremendous sacrifice. I want to thank Erin O'Toole and his family for their efforts and sacrifices leading our party over the past 18 months. I am personally grateful for the opportunities Erin provided me to serve in the Conservative Shadow Cabinet. I look forward to continuing to meet with stakeholders in the areas of tourism recovery, manufacturing, export promotion, and more. Moving forward, Conservatives will elect our Interim Leader this evening, and I am committed and focused on continuing to represent our local interests and issues in Ottawa. At the same time, I am dedicated to holding this reckless, divisive, and irresponsible Trudeau Government, to account. In the months ahead, I am confident our Conservatives party will stay united, and grow stronger. Our country badly needs a change in federal government, and I will work tirelessly to help elect our next Conservative Leader as Prime Minister of Canada.”

O'Toole resigned after the vote, but will stay on as MP for the Durham riding.
