Opponents of Quarry Expansion Making their Case

Niagara Regional council also heard from company which addressed concerns

Residents living near the Port Colborne Quarry on Highway 3 have stood before Niagara Regional council, giving their thoughts on expansion of the quarry.

Proponents of the work also spoke.

Sharon Ladd lives nearby, and says her home has had broken windows and cracked basement due to blasting.

She adds wildlife will be impacted.  "And this proposal will pollute the water table, which is a source of water for both human and animal consumption, as well as industry.  Once polluted, there is no process to clean, to correct, this huge water table."

Officials representing Rankin Construction, who owns the quarry, say there haven't been complaints of damage during its tenure, or for years before that.

Another neighbour wasn't too happy about what he calls 500 trucks going in and out, as well as trucks cued on the street.

David Siscoe, representing the quarry, addressed those concerns.

"There will not be 500 trucks a day.  No where near that... I'm not sure of the exact number, maybe 60 trucks a day.  As I mentioned in my presentation, there will be available room in the quarry for cueing of trucks, inside the gate, so that will not be an issue," he says.

Council did not make any decision following the recent discussion, it was for information purposes.
