OPP Report Higher Fatality Rate on Highways In 2020

There might have been less traffic on our highways last year, but that did not translate to  lower fatality rates.

The OPP has released its 2020 collision and fatality data that shows there were 26 per cent fewer collisions last year but the fatality rate was 22 per cent higher when compared to 2019 collisions.

Police say many of the fatalities were preventable and can be blamed on dangerous driving behaviours.

Among the deaths, 62 were linked to speed, 51 to alcohol/drug use, 45 to driver inattention and 55 to lack of seat belt use.

Forty-two motorcyclists were killed, marking a sharp increase over the 27 deaths in 2019.
