Operation Impact to Target Bad Driving

Police say they'll be watching Ontario roads this long weekend

Another appeal from Ontario Provincial police for everyone to drive safely this long weekend.

The force says the death toll on OPP patrolled highways has reached 268 heading into October, which is a 24-percent increase over this time last year.

Police say the majority of deaths were no "accident", but the result of drivers consciously making bad decisions, and not taking the privilege of driving seriously enough.

Stats show disregard for the safety of other drivers has been linked to 69 speed related fatalities, 57 inattentive fatalities, 40 related to alcohol and drugs and 40 from lack of seatbelt use.

Provincial police add they will be joining other forces for Operation Impact, targeting offending drivers.
