NDP allege at least one developer who bought Greenbelt land knew about the province's plans in advance
The Ontario NDP has submitted evidence to the province's integrity commissioner over the Ford government's plan to develop housing on parts of the Greenbelt.
The party alleges that at least one developer knew about the plans in advance.
In a letter dated January 27th, incoming party leader Marit Stiles says a development company - the Rice Group - met with officials from King Township and Southlake Health Network to discuss Greenbelt land it recently bought.
"King Township wrote ‘the commitment of a nominal fee for the hospital lands was conveyed verbally to Mayor Pellegrini during an in-person meeting with Rice Group and Southlake Representatives on November 1, 2022,'" the letter reads.
On November 4th, the province announced plans to remove lands from the Greenbelt to make way for 50,000 new homes.
The move has been widely criticized by environmental advocates and has raised questions about whether any developers were tipped off in advance.
As a result, the integrity commissioner has launched an investigation into Housing Minister Steve Clark.
Both Clark and Premier Doug Ford deny the allegations.
