Ontario NDP Introduces Petroleum Regulation Bill

Leader Andrea Horwath says proposed bill would prevent gouging at pumps by regulating the retail price of petroleum products.

Ontario's NDP are introducing a private member's bill to regulate the cost of petroleum.

If passed, the bill would give the Ontario Energy Board the power to regulate the retail price and wholesale mark-up on petroleum products.

Leader Andrea Horwath says this would prevent gouging at the pumps.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Todd Smith says OEB studies show that lower gas prices are not brought on by regulation, and he is urging the federal government to stop planned increases to the carbon tax.

The Ford government had previously promised to lower Ontario's fuel tax by 5.7 cents, but now say they will do that if the federal government also decreases taxes on gas.

Earlier today, Dan McTeague of Canadians for Affordable Energy said gas prices would hit $1.60 today and $1.67 a litre tomorrow.
