Ontario Looking to Attract Healthcare Workers from Other Provinces

Ford government proposes bill to recognize the credentials of health care workers registered in other provinces and territories

The Ontario government plans to introduce a new bill to attract healthcare workers from other provinces and territories.

If passed, the "as of right" rule will recognize the credentials of Canadian healthcare workers registered outside of Ontario, and allow them to provide care here immediately.

"Our government is making health care more accessible for Ontarians, which means recruiting more health care professionals to bolster our health care system and making it easier for them to start working," said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. "A highly-skilled health care worker from British Columbia or Nova Scotia shouldn’t have to pause their career or face barriers to practice here in Ontario."

Premier Doug Ford says the bill will not require workers to register with one of Ontario's health regulatory colleges.

The province also plans to introduce legislation that will allow health care professionals to work outside of their regular roles, as long as they have the skills to do so.

Officials say this will give hospitals more flexibility to ensure high-demand roles are being filled.

Both bills will be introduced next month.
