Ontario Increasing Support for Human Trafficking Victims in Niagara

The provincial government is committing $1.4 million over the next five years to help human trafficking victims in Niagara.

The funds will be used to create a new community-based program that will assist victims and survivors with getting access to necessary supports.

Associate Minister of Children and Women's Issues Jill Dunlop says programs such as this are vital to the healing of young victims.

"This new residential program in Niagara will help keep young victims of sex trafficking safe while providing wrap-around supports to help them heal. Residential care is extremely helpful in supporting recovery, particularly programs like this, which are developed and managed by survivors."

The new program will be delivered by YWCA Niagara Region, and it's being funded through the provincial Anti-Human Trafficking Community Supports Fund.

Youth aged 16 to 24 will be provided with access to crisis housing, peer support, trauma therapy and cultural connection.

Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff spoke highly of the program.

"With human trafficking being one of the fastest-growing crimes worldwide, there is a critical need for more services to help victims and survivors. These new programs will help young people rebuild their lives so they can pursue their dreams free from exploitation."

As part of Ontario's Anti-Human Trafficking Strategy, 27 new projects are being funded across the province.
