Ontario Homeowners Being Warned of New Door-to-Door Scam

Homeowners in several parts of Ontario, including Welland, report being victims of door-to-door home improvement scam.

The Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) of Ontario is warning consumers to be cautious of door to door salespeople.

The group says property owners in several parts of the province, including Welland, have reported being approached by door to door scammers offering home improvements.

The scammers also offered assistance with mortgage refinancing and terminating home service/equipment contracts (e.g. HVAC, furnaces and water heaters).

The individuals requested payment in cash and recorded personal financial details.

Homeowners later found that liens were registered against their properties, or their existing mortgages were discharged and replaced with larger mortgages at higher interest rates.

Anyone who thinks they might have been a victim is urged to contact police.

The FSRA says if you're approached by anyone offering these services, you should verify their identities and business and refrain from paying cash for services or divulging personal financial information.
