The provincial government has pledged $90,000 in funding for Niagara Regional Police Services.

The money will be used towards the purchase of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems designed to help officers detect, investigate and stop crime.

Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff approves of the move.

"People in Niagara need to feel safe in their homes and their businesses as we recover from the impacts of COVID-19 without fear of crime."

NRP Chief of Police Bryan MacCulloch said that the CCTV systems will make Niagara a safer place.

"The Niagara Region has not been immune to the increase of gun violence that we have seen in other communities and we welcome this opportunity to work collaboratively with our partners at the City of St. Catharines and City of Niagara Falls to address these concerning incidents within our region.  This additional funding from the Province of Ontario allows us to expand the existing network, making our community safer for both residents and visitors to Niagara."

The Ontario CCTV grant was announced in August 2020.

It will provide police services across the province with $6 million over three years for CCTV systems.
