Ontario Government Providing $125 Million to Add Beds in COVID-19 Hot Spots

The province announced today that a $125 million investment will be made to add more hospital beds in regions with high numbers.

Premier Doug Ford announced that the investment will be used towards adding about 500 beds to hot spot regions, including Toronto, Windsor, Durham, Kingston and Ottawa.

"These 500 new beds will reduce pressures on hospitals in these hot spot regions, as we battle COVID-19."

He also said that some of the funds will be used to temporarily transition Mackenzie Health's Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital into a systemwide resource to support the province's COVID-19 response.

The hospital, which is slated to open on February 7th, will provide 185 beds, including 35 critical care beds and 150 general medicine beds.

It will support patients from other hospitals and help alleviate the challenges that the pandemic has brought to Ontario's hospitals.
