Online Scams on the Rise in Niagara

Police say you should always be cautious when buying and selling items online.

The NRP have also seen a rise in online frauds and scams with more people spending time on the internet during COVID-19.

The Puppy Scam is one of them.

The scam artist will pose as a dog breeder and they will ask for money in order to hold the puppy.

Police say you should do your research beforehand to make sure you’re dealing with a reputable dog breeder.

The Sextortion Scam is also fairly common.

The victims receive an e-mail saying their computer has been hacked and scam artist threatens to release compromising photos if they don’t send them bitcoin.

Police say chances are your computer has not been hacked, and the scam artist is just trying to trick you into sending them money.
