Old Scow Here to Stay

Niagara Parks Commission

Despite claim by U.S. scrap metal company it's been contracted to remove the iconic boat

For now it appears the Niagara Parks Commission will let mother nature take care of the Old Scow in the Upper Niagara River

The NPC telling the Review there is no truth to a claim by an American scrap company that it has been contracted to remove the scow from above the falls

Sawenhalve Scrap, out of North Carolina, made the claim on its Facebook page.

But the post does appear to be satrical in nature, ending with the following statement:

“All employees working the site will be required to wear special barrels that will protect them if they accidentally fall into the river and go over the falls.”

Here is the entire post:

Today we've been contacted by the Niagara Parks Commission. They wish for us to remove and scrap the broken up remains of both the Niagara Scow and a World War I antisubmarine patrol boat called the Sunbeam.

Both vessels were involved in incidents in the first half of the 20th century that ended up with them being caught on rock shoals along the Niagara River, 838 yards short of the Niagara Falls.

Due to precarious nature of where they are at, no attempt to removing them has been made before. Eventually time passed and both vessels have started to break apart. We are being brought in to clear out the remains, to keep them from befouling the area any longer.

Due to the proximity to the falls we will be charging extra for the work to be done. All employees working the site will be required to wear special barrels that will protect them if they accidently fall into the river and go over the falls.
