OHL Cancels Return-to-Play Plan

Bad news for hockey fans in Ontario.

The OHL has announced that there won't be a 2020-21 season, due to the third wave of the pandemic.

It's the only Canadian major junior league to not have a season this year.

OHL Commissioner David Branch says despite the league's best efforts, it's not safe to return to play at the moment.

"We have worked tirelessly with the Province and the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the past year on different scenarios and different windows of opportunity but the reality is the conditions in Ontario have never been right to start and complete an uninterrupted, safe opportunity for players to showcase their skills."

While the league and the province had reached an agreement on the OHL Return to Play plan a few weeks ago, a spike in cases occurred, resulting in overwhelming conditions for the province's health care system.

The league's goal was to showcase its players for scouts during a shortened season for the 2021 NHL Draft, Hockey Canada's World Junior Summer Evaluation Camp and U SPORTS men's hockey programs.
