Officials Bracing For Peace Bridge Protest this Weekend

Groups from both sides of the border planning to demonstrate at the Peace Bridge this weekend.

Another protest against COVID-19 pandemic restrictions is being planned for this weekend, this time for the Peace Bridge.

Groups from Canada and the U.S. are expected to hit the area at some point tomorrow, but there is no word yet on exactly how many protesters are expected.

We spoke to Fort Erie Mayor Wayne Redekop, who says there will be a police presence on the bridge this weekend, but doesn't know how many resources will be deployed.

"We don't know how many vehicles will show up or the type of vehicles, whether it's just the truckers protesting mandates or if there will be other hangers on that have been protesting all nature of public mandates."

Niagara Regional Police also tweeting out that it will monitor the situation in order to ensure public safety.

Earlier this week, Canada Unity, the group behind demonstrations in Ottawa, announced gatherings in Stoney Creek and Niagara-on-the-Lake before heading to the bridge.

Meanwhile, the Convoy to Save America, a group created to support the convoy in Ottawa, says it will send two convoys to the bridge, one from New York City and one from Tennessee.

A post on the group's website says they will bring supplies to truckers and supporters demonstrating.

Earlier today, Premier Doug Ford announced a state of emergency in Ontario due to protests in Ottawa and Windsor.

Ford said protesters will face penalties including a fine of up to $100,000 and a year in prison.
