Officer Who Killed George Floyd Sentenced to 22.5 Years in Prison

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for murdering George Floyd last year.

In April, he was convicted of second degree murder in Floyd's death, which sparked calls against racial injustice across the globe.

The punishment falls short of the 30 year sentence recommended by prosecutors.

The 45 year old could be paroled for good behaviour after serving two-thirds of his sentence, which comes to about 15 years.

Floyd's family, including his young daughter, read victim impact statements in court today.

Judge Peter Cahill also denied a request for a new trial for Chauvin.
