NRP Offers Halloween Safety Tips

Police reminding drivers to slow down for children

Trick or treaters will be knocking on doors tonight, and the NRP has some tips to help keep kids safe.

"It's important to remain on sidewalks and cross the street at designated cross walks or traffic-controlled intersections," says NRP Constable Barry Ravenuk.

He also recommends traveling in groups with a responsible adult, in order to increase safety and visibility.

To increase visibility for drivers, you can put reflective lights on your child's costume, dress kids up in light colours, or give them a flashlight or glow sticks to carry around.

Ravenuk also has some tips for drivers.

"We know that the popular trick or treating times will be between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. So, drivers should be especially alert during these times, particularly in subdivisions and entering driveways. Bottom line, drivers should slow down and keep an eye out for children."

As well, parents are being reminded to check their child's candy, and toss anything that isn't commercially wrapped.
