NRP Launch Anti Scam Program

Program designed to stop fraud at point of sale

The Niagara Regional Police Service is debuting a new program to help prevent residents from becoming the victims of scammers.

The NRP say in February and March they investigated 57 incidents involving the Grandparent Scam, where victims paid scammers approximately $150,000 in cash, money that was never recovered.

Just last month, police began an investigation after an elderly couple purchased $22,000 in gift cards from three different retailers.

Officials note, none of the five salesclerks involved in the sale of the gift cards, questioned the purchases.

To prevent that from happening again police have launched "The Point Sale Scam Intervention Program"  to create awareness and education for retail and financial institution employees.

Managers are encouraged to download the education program for their employees to view.
