NRP Issues Warning of a Credit Card Scam

The NRP says that fraudsters are illegally obtaining credit cards, and are using them to purchase a large amount of goods over the phone and email.

Once the goods have been picked up or delivered, the cards are found to be stolen or fraudulent.

This results in a financial loss or a charge back to the business.

The police warn that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more businesses are conducting transactions over the phone and online, making it harder to get to know their customers.

They are reminding businesses to confirm cheques, money orders and bank drafts before releasing merchandise.

Merchants are advised to protect themselves by collecting as much customer information as possible, and verify information such as phone number, address and transaction details.

Customers are reminded to regularly review account statements and immediately file a report if your credit card is missing.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim of a scam is asked to call Niagara Regional Police Service.
