NRP Investigating Online Threats Against Dr. Hirji

Niagara Regional Police say that they are investigating online threats made against Niagara's Acting Medical Officer of Health.

The posts were made following Friday's announcement that Niagara would be the only region in the province entering the grey-lockdown category of Ontario's colour-coded COVID-19 framework.

Hirji reportedly recommended that Niagara be placed in the grey zone.

The NRP say that an investigation has been launched, and no further comments will be made at this time.

"We are aware of the social media posts in reference to Dr. Hirji that have been reported in the media. We have commenced an investigation. We will not be commenting any further at this time regarding that investigation."

Premier Doug Ford is among the officials who are speaking up in defense of Hirji.

"There is absolutely no place for these kinds of threats in Ontario. Cut it out. Our health officials have only one priority: the health and well-being of their communities. We’re lucky to have such dedicated public health officials in Ontario."

Regional Chair Jim Bradley is also calling for civility and respect.

"I want to be unequivocally clear in my rebuke of these public comments: there is no place for violence, disrespect or viciousness in Niagara. This type of language is completely unacceptable and entirely counterproductive. Rhetoric of this kind is embarrassing and does little but discredit any argument an individual may have.

I want to remind members of the public that Dr. Hirji is doing what he believes necessary to protect the health and lives of those in the community. While I can appreciate that there are those who are frustrated, any call for violence, regardless of the passion a person may be feeling in the moment, is not acceptable."
