NRP Holding 20th Annual Back to School Safety Blitz Today

It's the first day back to school for lots of kids across Niagara.

NRP Spokesperson Stephanie Sabourin says officers will be keeping a close eye on drivers in school zones starting at 8:00 a.m. this morning.

"We have officers out across the Niagara Region from Chief of Police Bryan MacCulloch down to uniform officers all the way through detectives reassigned for the day to ensure that they're watching for speed enforcement, safety restraints and watching for people who are texting while driving."

She's also reminding drivers to stop for school buses whenever the stop arm is out and the lights are flashing.

Niagara Student Transportation Services has equipped some of its buses with cameras and it sends the footage to the NRP whenever they catch someone illegally passing a bus.

Sabourin says it's been a while since drivers have had to take all of this into account.

"With the prolonged absence due to COVID-19, kids haven't been in school for several months now and the realities of when children are on the road and school buses are on the road it changes the way people drive."

She says the NRP's Traffic Enforcement unit will be keeping an eye on the school zones for the rest of the week.
