No Working Smoke Alarms During Deadly Hamilton Fire

Ontario Fire Marshal reminding residents to have working smoke alarms

The province's fire marshal says there weren't any working smoke alarms during a fatal fire in Hamilton last week.

Ontario Fire Marshal Jon Pegg released an update this afternoon on a blaze that killed four people on December 29th.

Pegg says the fire began on a living room couch on the main floor of a townhouse, and all of the residents were on the second floor when the fire occurred.

Pegg notes the family was trapped inside due to the location of the fire and configuration of the home, and there weren't any working smoke alarms inside the home.

The six residents were taken to hospital, where two adults and two kids were pronounced dead.

As of Friday morning, the other two people were in stable condition.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and police have not released the identities of the victims.

Pegg says there were 133 fire-related deaths in Ontario last year, which is the highest total in over two decades.

Ontarians are being encouraged to make sure they have working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan for their homes.
