Attempt last night to get rebate approved fails

The Mayor of Pelham getting shut down not once but twice last night at regional council.

Marvin Junkin seconded a motion by Niagara Falls Councillor Bob Gale to give every homeowner in Niagara with a net family income of $160,000 or less a $240 rebate.

But before the debate could begin council voted in favour of a motion introduced by St. Catharines councillors' Kelly Edgar and Brian Heit to refer the tax rebate to staff to take a look at.

A frustrated Bob Gale, noting "the taxpayer loses again."

Meanwhile, an attempt by the Pelham Mayor to diminish the power of the local Medical Officer of Health also failed last night.

Junkin introduced a motion that would have prevented the MOH from introducing any local public health measure that is not aligned with the public health measures recommended by Ontario's Chief Medical Officer.

But Lincoln Councillor Robert Foster quickly noted the move would contravene current Ontario statutes dictating the powers of local Medical Officers of Health.

Foster introduced a motion, that passed, to refer it back to staff for legal opinion.
