Niagara Region Announces Changes to Holiday Waste Collection

Residents can have two extra bags of garbage in the week following Christmas and News Year's Day.

Households will be allowed to have extra garbage at the curb following the holidays.

The Niagara Region says two extra bags or cans of garbage without a tag can be placed outside of homes on their curbside collection day in their corresponding garbage collection week following Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Residents in single family homes and apartments with six units or less can put out four bags of garbage.

Since Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on a Saturday this year, there won't be any changes to the collection schedule.

Garbage collection takes place December 27th - 31st in Fort Erie, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Pelham, St. Catharines, Thorold, Wainfleet and West Lincoln, and January 3rd - 7th in Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara Falls, Port Colborne and Welland.

All materials must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.

As well, Niagara Region will collect Christmas trees from January 10th-14th for single family homes and apartments with six units or less.

Trees must have all ornaments removed, and cannot be wrapped in plastic, buried in snow or on top of snow banks.

Artificial trees will not be accepted.
