Niagara Public Health Preparing for Large-Scale Vaccine Rollout this Month

Niagara Public Health is announcing plans to deliver vaccines on a large scale.

The plans come as Canada approves the AstraZeneca vaccine and vaccination supply increasing in Ontario later this month.

Niagara Public Health says that some parts of the province received initial vaccine shipments in December, a month earlier than Niagara.

When the provincial portal launches on March 15th, as well as the increased vaccine supply later in the month, Niagara expects to be in a position to be able to deliver mass vaccinations at the same time as the rest of the province.

The organization says that once the portal is open and mass vaccination clinic details are available, eligible groups will be notified through broad communications.

Niagara Region Public Health says that right now, frontline health care workers are being scheduled for vaccinations.

Later this month, inoculations will be given to Indigenous communities, before opening vaccinations to those 80 years of age and older.

The region will have vaccination clinics in all 12 municipalities.

Once those 80 and older are vaccinated, Niagara Region Public Health will follow the provincial prioritization criteria until everyone 60 and older has had a chance to receive doses.

The province hopes to open vaccinations up to all residents of Ontario by the beginning of fall.
