Niagara Projects to Benefit From Provincial Investment to Protect Great Lakes

The Ontario government is supporting 44 projects designed to help protect and restore Ontario's Great Lakes.

The province has invested $1.9 million in the Great Lakes Local Action Fund.

The announcement was made by David Piccini, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

"The health of the Great Lakes is closely connected to our province’s health and prosperity - supplying water to our communities, sustaining traditional activities of Indigenous peoples and providing healthy ecosystems for recreation and tourism. This funding allows local organizations and groups to take environmental actions in their own communities - building a better future with clean, green growth."

A Greener Future is getting $30,000 for the Love Your Lake project, which will conduct 100 litter clean ups along the shores of Lake Ontario between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Kingston.

The Niagara chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada is getting $47,875 for the Bring Back the Brookies project.

The project will teach local residents and groups about the aquatic habitat in Upper Twelve Mile Creek.

As well, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority is getting $48,940 for the Niagara Visual Assessment Survey Tool, an initiative to fill in data gaps for nuisance algae and shoreline erosion rates and water level changes in Niagara.
